Leomir is a master's candidate at UP-MSI. He is a MS Marine Science student majoring in Marine Biotechnology. Tomorrow (February 10, 2016), he will stand before a crowd of seasoned scientists and young researchers to defend his master's thesis. The title of his research is "Influence of Thermal Stress on a Coral-Associated Bacterial Community." I was planning to do the one-to-one interview last week with Leo but he was no where to be found. Oh well. Mas masaya sana. So I just emailed this set of questions to Leo a few days ago while he was very busy preparing for his presentation (his FB account is currently deactivated, which means "dead-seriously busy"). Fortunately, he sent his answers back almost immediately. Shout out to mummy lea (my dear grad life sister). Fighting! It's short but I hope you'll find this whole thing inspiring. Chazz! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. So you are defending your thesis, how are you preparing for the big day? - major prep is your powerpoint presentation para maintindihan nang madla kung ano ginagawa mo cuz you are using advanced tools (NGS) to answer ecological questions. alam mo naman karamihan mga tao sa msi, mga ecology people. [Kelangang] simple and concise lang. 2. Five words to describe your "thesis life." - relax, composed, learn, sleep, eat.....a lot? (kaya lumaki ang tiyan). {A/N: Huwag isisi sa pag-gawa ng thesis ang laki ng tiyan! >.<] 3. In one sentence, describe your study. Simple terms, please. - coral bacteria. [A/N: sobrang simple naman teh!] 4. What is interesting about your study? insights on the functional role of bacteria on the holobiont health. 5. What would be the perfect song for your thesis? - Colors of the wind [A/N: Ay teh! Aling part ka 'dun nakarelate? Binalikan ko pa talaga 'yung lyrics dahil hindi ko gets kung ito pinili niya.] 6. Do you have a motto or adage in mind during the whole time you did your study? "If they can do it, why cant I"? char lang! 7. What was the most memorable moment that happened while you were doing your study? - (The) time when I got the perfect genomic DNA. 8. Did you ever plead to your samples/study materials? -I always talk to them like they were my friend, my jowa and my loved ones. lahat na ng santo tinawag ko para lang matapos ang experiment 9. If given the chance to change your thesis topic, would you? -n/a, I will never change my topic because I learned a lot from it. [A/N: Miss Universe ang ate niyo ow] 10. Did you ever cry because of your thesis? How many times did you cry while you're conducting your thesis experiment? Where? -yes, when I was drunk, (3x i guess?). Location: BML (Bolinao Marine Laboratory) 11. Can you give a few tips on how to DO a master's thesis? respect your schedule, be on time. stick to your objective and be patient. remember: kung may tsaga may nilagang baka. [A/N: Terey! achieve 'yan] 12. Say your thanks to the awesome people who have played a significant role in the progress of your thesis. - thanks to all my friends (MSI and BML people), hindi ko na isa isahin kasi marami, and to my adviser by pushing me to my limit kahit dumodugo na ang ilong...hahahaha 13. So sasablay? Hello "Graduation 2016"? -Yes, hello 2016......GRAD na jud! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ #13Questions has been created for everyone, especially those who are less familiar with science and tech research, to have an idea or two about what these young researchers have been thinking about or have been doing (in MSI, for now) during one of the most critical phases in their graduate student life - thesis. It is not technically 13 questions, it is more of 13 points? But we are also planning to feature other grad students with interesting stories. Yup. Are you a grad student? Want to share your exciting experiences with us (and everybody)? Tell MMEEL! We'll be more than happy to have you featured in RA corner. ^__^v xoxo JUNYBELS

Last October 24-26, 2015, the Marine Molecular Ecology and Evolution Laboratory participated in the biennial National Symposium in Marine Science organized by the Philippine Association of Marine Science. Several members of the lab participated in the oral presentations while others partook in the poster presentations.
