Tomorrow, Filipino marine scientists will make a stand. A team from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will embark on a two-week research expedition in the islands and reefs of Kalayaan (Spratlys). Under the PROTECT WPS Project (funded by the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau), the team aims to generate baseline biological and oceanographic data to detect changes in these marine ecosystems threatened by overexploitation and reef destruction. This information will be useful in understanding the biodiversity, connectivity, and interactions between biotic and physical influences in the region and will be important in developing management strategies and protective measures to defend our nation’s patrimony.
We commend our brave marine biologists and oceanographers for asserting our rights to conduct research and join them in standing up for our sovereignty and freedom in the West Philippine Sea. ANG KALAYAAN AY SA PILIPINAS! ATIN ANG KASARINLAN SA WEST PHILIPPINE SEA! MABUHAY ANG SIYENTIPIKONG PILIPINO!
