Hello everyone! First things first (I'm the realest): congratulations to all the graduates! Super congrats to all UP-MSI graduates this school year! Great job! From La MMEEL familia! Ohoh. The deadline for submission of graduate school (MS and PhD) application at UP-MSI is on the last day of June! If you're interested, send in your application double ASAP! Interested but apprehensive? Why not visit the different labs in MSI to get a feel (or two) of the MSI vibe? Perhaps, you are interested in molecular ecology; then, visit our lab (we offer stick-o and dingdong and free tea. ehem)! How about oceanography or marine resource management? Or do you want to work on specific organisms like corals, fish, microbes? Besh, you can check out the different labs and what they do (here). You want to know the requirements for applying? then click here. Okay! Another late post from me. Sorry na po. :( Anyway, here's Adi's fun version of 13 questions! His thesis was entitled "Metagenomics survey of the microbial community in two biogeographic regions in the Philippine archepelagic seas." I believe the publication of this study is underway (righ(t)? lol); so, let's just patiently wait for now. I hope you enjoy reading his pak na pak answers as much as I did! ===================================================================================== 1. Any special prep for the D-day? Nothing special actually. More of emotional preparation than anything else. Been busy with non-thesis stuff days before defense, good thing I was able to convince myself that the defense is more like a sharing than a defense. Years of experiments and analysis and at the end of it, you just want to share what you’ve learn. #thesissharing (A/N: Yesss! share! Everybody should engage in knowledge sharing including chisms! Like si ano, nagslide na sa rainbow! Happy PRIDE!) 2. Five words to describe your "thesis life." Procurement. Sequencing. Microbes. Cruises. Bioinformatics. (A/N: Procurement is a trigger word, so yeah. it's in Bold and bigger font. Dear UPD Procurement, we kennat. But hey besh, don't let this deter you from joining MSI or UP's research community! It's just a small part of the challenge like, pffft, 49%? Joke lang! XD) 3. In one sentence, describe your study. Simple terms, please. We looked at the diversity and structure of marine microbes in Philippine waters. 4. What is interesting about your study? You can discuss. One interesting finding is that The Philippines is probably NOT the center of marine microbial diversity in contrast with the diversity patterns of macroorganisms. This is probably because microbes are easily dispersed by currents. 5. What would be the perfect song for your thesis? Love, Sex, Magic by Ciara and J Timberlake. First, you need to find a topic that you love then you get mind-fucked then tada the rest is like magic. Chos! (A/N: ERMAA! I LOVE IT. So wetty! witty pala. Pero......sana panagutan ako ng thesis. Or pa'no 'pag 'di nagworkout kahit pa mahal mo, righ(t)? #memamemamema)
6. Kung ikaw ay isang biomolecule, lab chemical or technique, ano ka at bakit? Probably, fatty acids since they are capable of self-assembly. I love to think that I’m independent. Kailangan ko din magpa-payat pala. Hahaha! (A/N: she-shelf...? shelf-asshembly(ah)....? char! sana pala tinanong ko rin kung nakakataba ang pag-gawa ng thesis... sa susunod na 13Q) 7. What is that one "SOMETHING" (pweds tao, bagay, hayop, pook, pangyayari) in MSI that just by thinking about it makes you smile? Local cruises? And close friends at MSI. (A/N: oh?!! Nagexpect akong si ano! char lennngg!) 8. Craziest thing you did that involved your thesis. Scientific pursuit in itself is crazy difficult and fun. 9. Why research? Why MSI? Tell us about what makes your MS journey fun. Dami kong feels sa tanong na 'to. I can write one whole thesis for this. LOL. To summarize, as a graduate of biochem, I can (1) study med (2) go work in the academe (3) work in the industry. I don’t want to memorize and my parents are not rich to pay for med school. So that’s a no. Plus I don’t want to work in the industry. I think it stems from my sociopolitical ideology which is leaning to left. Pinapayaman mo lang ang may-ari ng kompanya, especially if it’s a big company. But small and medium scale businesses are good, they fuel the economy. I don’t want to work just for profit. In the academe, you're devoting your time for the advancement of human knowledge however small and almost negligible it is to some. Someone will build upon your findings and will advance human life and our relationship with the environment. MSI because the faculty and the institute is the best in the country. This is not to say na walang problem sa MSI and UP, ha. We are just very blessed with dedicated professors. Dami nilang ginagawa bes, as in, tapos mas mataas pa sweldo ni Mocha Uson. Ugh. (A/N: Ladies and gentlemen, your next Miss Universe hopeful! Lavet! Anyway, tagay sa ating mga magigiting na profs!) 10. Did lab life ever interfere with your love life? showbiz answer plesh. Ano po yung love life? No idea what that is. LELS. (A/N: See? another reason why you, beshie, should apply grad studies at MSI! It's the center of the center of beautiful, brilliant, and single organisms...ay people pala! Chaughs! Baka tumaas ang kilay ng ibang insti. ahihi) 11. Is there a secret to balancing MS, RAship, and NIGHT LIFE? Wait, less party na ako this year *fingers crossed*, more of genuine human interaction. Hehehe. This is a difficult question because this limits human diversity. What I mean is, may mga tao na home buddy and will be happy doing just one thing. And there are those that want to do a lot of things. Both are totally fine. Secret? One is, tumanggap ng sobrang mabigat na responsibility. Responsibility na tingin mo hindi mo kaya and do your best to deliver. That way you will learn to manage your time better. Continue pushing yourself to your limit. But then again you need to learn to say no. 12. You have a Biochem degree but your thesis was about marine microbes. Recently, you have been very active in oceanography research. Tell us what's going on in your mind while you were doing these endeavors unrelated to biochem. Baka ma-shookt ang mga tao lalo. Pero I want to pursue an MA in Economics after PhD in Science. I think we live in a crucial time and we need an interdisciplinary approach to solve the problems in the society. (A/N: SHOOKT!!! erma. I don't even know what shookt means but I feel sooo millennial. XD Deh, Pero lavan lang sa interdisciplinary keme! Adi para sa next MSI director!) 13. 3 years lang, tapos ka na! What has been your motivation? Actually 4 years. Hehe. Kasi there’s a lot of things to do after Masters. There’s a life out there. Push na mga besh. (A/N: Ay grabe. Mali yung source ko ng info. Fake news parang si Auntie Mocha Uson. Pasensiya na.) Bonus: So, what's your final answer to this question: "How do you politely say to the person you're dating that you don't want to continue anymore"? I’ll say: humans have approx. 0.1% difference in their DNA. This subtle difference makes us unique but I’m not finding the particular phenotype that I’m looking for in my date. Chos! +=================================================================================== That's about it! Congratulations Adi! Lavan lang all the way! In case this 13Qs got you curious and want to stalk Adi, here's his blog: https://andriangajigan.wordpress.com/ and a link to some of his recent publications: 1. Resilience of the prokaryotic microbial community of Acropora digitifera to elevated temperature (Mars Leomir is one of the authors! have you read his 13Qs?) 2. A microRNA regulates the response of corals to thermal stress You can also look for him in their lab (MMBL). Oh, you are welcome. Shameless personal promotions? you can reach me through this site! Char! Till next 13Qs! xoxo Juny
