Rose Angeli "The Babaeng 4ward" Rioja will present the fruits of her labor this Monday (Apr. 22, 2019 @ UP-MSI AVR). She will defend her thesis entitled (pati thesis entitled, #$%^%$) "Effects of light on behavior, growthm and survival of Stichopus cf. horrens juveniles." 1. Any special prep for the special day? -stress eating, walang kamatayang honkai impact. Nomu coz pweds na. 2. Provide six keywords/phrases for your thesis. -sea cucumber, light, negative phototaxis, positive thigmotaxis, food enrichment, conspecifics 3. Ngayon, without using your keywords, kuwento mo thesis mo in 1-2 sentences. What are your study's implications to conservation and management? Ipaliwanag mo sa stakeholders, go. -pass. Sa defense na <A/N: PRETTITIH?! MSI-AVR, 2PM guys> 5. Perfect song ng iyong thesis life? -sana dalawa ang puso ko ??? 6. Naiyak ka nga habang nagti-thesis? Kwento! - hahaha several times gurl. Nakaka-low eq magmonitor every 2 hrs anek. 'Pag wala sila, wala tayo." 7. We're sure marami kang memorable moments sa iyong grad school journey. O mapakikinggan (future tense). <A/N: AGAIN: shaaaaaaaaaade garl!> 8. Going to grad school can be really challenging. Top 3 things you want every pure soul to know about surviving grad school (or your mid to late 20s for that matter) - Know your adviser (strengths, weaknesses, basta background check baka marcos pala 'yan). - Maghanap ng funding, trabaho, project, at conference grants (para mabuhay ka naman in this economy, in this political situation). Also, UP infirmary offers FREE PSYCH CONSULTATION ok lavan lang <A/N: I wez leyk> 9. Naranasan mo bang umibig? - hahaha <A/N: me to my friend:> 10. What's next for you? - May balak apply-an pero after defense na. Sana makuha ayeee. Kung hindi, oh whale. 11. ANO. SAGOT! portion with no explanations bukod kay MAJM, favorite senior staff? -Mike Roleda favorite merienda? -palitaw first floor, second floor, o third floor? 3rd floor??? -Teka may trabaho ba muna sya chareng (not following instructions) <A/N: us2 nu yun? isang milk tea lang, spill ko lahat. ahihi> scabra o horrens? -horrens fast grower o pangmatagalan? -PANGMATAGALAN!!!! pera, pag-ibig, o data? -Pag-ibig sana chareng top down o bottom up? -Bottom up! malinis pero mabaho o dumihin pero mabango? -Dumihin pero mabango >>>>>>>>>>time's up!<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 13. Anong message mo kay… PRRD? - <A/N: Censored answer bleep bleep. PM me for the explicit version. :))>. Know your worth and know what you want to do. Sooooo. That's it for this episode of 13Qs++!! Abangan niyo kung sino ang sasalang sa new and juicier season ng #13Questions. xoxo

Tomorrow, Filipino marine scientists will make a stand. A team from the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will embark on a two-week research expedition in the islands and reefs of Kalayaan (Spratlys). Under the PROTECT WPS Project (funded by the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau), the team aims to generate baseline biological and oceanographic data to detect changes in these marine ecosystems threatened by overexploitation and reef destruction. This information will be useful in understanding the biodiversity, connectivity, and interactions between biotic and physical influences in the region and will be important in developing management strategies and protective measures to defend our nation’s patrimony.
We commend our brave marine biologists and oceanographers for asserting our rights to conduct research and join them in standing up for our sovereignty and freedom in the West Philippine Sea. ANG KALAYAAN AY SA PILIPINAS! ATIN ANG KASARINLAN SA WEST PHILIPPINE SEA! MABUHAY ANG SIYENTIPIKONG PILIPINO! OG MMEEL Kenneth and Juny closed the first semester (last month) with their successfully defended theses. Kenneth examined lineage divergence in Stichopus cf. horrens populations using microsats and SNPs. Juny developed SNP markers for genetic traceability of Holothuria scabra.
Watch their presentations in our facebook page! [KENNETH] [JUNY] You two make us proud. You make us want to graduate asap azwel. Congrats! Exit interviews to follow! ;) A recently published study demonstrates high genetic diversity but large-scale genetic homogeneity among Porites lutea (Scleractinia: Poritidae) populations in the South China Sea. This figure shows the direction and magnitude of the estimated gene flow between populations of the coral P. lutea within the South China Sea. It also highlights the significance of some reef sites, including the Spratly Islands, Paracel Islands, Hainan, and the Scarborough Shoal, as major sources of Porites larvae and genetic material, supplying and replenishing most of the populations in the South China Sea basin.
Although some of the paper's sites are well within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Philippines (e.g., Scarborough Shoal, Jacinto Reef/Livock Reef, Arellano Reef/Alicia Annie Reef, and Bulig Shoal/First Thomas Reef), the authors from China were able to freely collect and study their coral specimens in the summers of 2015 and 2016 without even acknowledging the authority of the Philippines in their sampling. It is ironic that in the process of protecting our territory and natural resources, our self-imposed bureaucracy allows these unregulated collection trips to push through, which, in the long run, further weaken our claims to these disputed reefs. While we commend the government’s efforts to regulate the exploitation of our resources, I call on the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development to be more vigilant not only to our own people but also to those who try to undermine the country’s jurisdiction in these waters.
