Andrew F. Torres together with Kenneth M. Kim successfully presented their thesis studies at the 1st CS Conference held in the Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City. Andrew has been chosen as the sole representative of the MSI to present (a part of) his master's thesis with the title "Rarity of the "common" coral Pocillopora damicornis in the Philippines", which was recently published at Coral Reefs (https://doi.org/10.1007/s00338-018-1729-3). Additionally, Andrew presented his poster entry at the conference entitled "Zooxanthellae diversity in Philippine corals: Biogeographic variability in the Pocilloporidae", whereas Kenneth shared the results of his study entitled "Cryptic Genetic Diversity In Stichopus cf. horrens: Reproductive Isolation Revealed By Microsatellite And SNP Markers". We are very proud of you! <3

Two years ago, Dr. Rachel, Gihanna, and Juny won the gold award for their research paper "Novel genomic resources for sandfish Holothuria scabra: Discovery of putative SNP markers and unique transcripts associated with fast-growth juveniles using whole-transcriptome sequencing" during the 27th National Research Symposium of the Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR). Ngayon lang po namin naisipang kunin ang plaka. 😅 Watch the (award-winning) unboxing moment below! Mikel submitted his study to the 8th Fisheries Scientific Conference of the DA-BFAR National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and ended up in the finals. His study, "Basin-scale population connectivity of mud crabs (Scylla) in the Sulu Sea Philippines: Potential importance to regional fishery management," was one of the top four submissions in the Capture Fisheries category and was presented this afternoon in Hotel Jen, Manila. Although he did not clinch the top prize, Mikel says his participation was a learning experience as it was his first oral presentation in a national conference.
Congrats pa rin, Mikel! |
